Class Categories

Introductory

These classes are designed for new students of Aikido but are an excellent opportunity to study the basics at any stage of ones training. North Wind Aikikai is intimately associated with the three colleges of the Fargo- Moorhead community and frequently hosts introductory classes for these students. This allows new members to start from the beginning in a structured progression two times a year. All dojo members are welcome to attend these classes.

Intermediate

These classes are designed to maintain a regular rhythm and intensity for more advanced students. Practitioners are expected to know the basics of falling well enough to practice together safely. Generally, students are ready for this level of practice after a month or two of introductory classes.

Children's Aikido

Aikido is an excellent martial art for kids. The environment of training is supportive and disciplined, encouraging concentration, consideration, respect and cooperation. Children will be introduced to the traditions of Japan and the martial arts as well as the dynamic harmonious movements unique to Aikido. Classes will involve stretching exercises to strengthen and relax the body, conditioning exercises to cultivate a strong center of a gravity, and techniques that allow for non-aggressive responses to attack. Children between the ages of 6-12 are welcome to register now for classes.

Iaido

Iaido is a separate martial art born directly out of the samurai tradition of the sword. This art is focused on the act of drawing a sword in order to simultaneously cut down an opponent. This practice is done individually requiring significant concentration. Iaido is available only by permission of the chief instructor.

Weapons

These classes are designed to expand the fundamentals of Aikido. The weapons studied include the bokken (wooden sword) the jo (wooden staff) and the tanto (wooden dagger). These classes are available only to North Wind Aikikai members, and only by permission of the chief instructor.

Zazen

Zazen is meditation in the tradition of Zen Buddhism. These classes are available only to North Wind Aikikai members, and only by permission of the chief instructor.
